Breath Easy Sleep Tight: Treatment Options for the Epidemic – Obstructive Sleep Apnea Sleep Apnea

This talk will define Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and explore various ways of testing for it and how to differentiate OSA from other sleep disorders. We will then review the various methods of treating this serious medical condition including surgical, Continuous Positive air pressure (C-Pap), and the growing popularity of oral or Mandibular Advancement Appliances. We will review the Standards and Guidelines from the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and the American Academies of Sleep Medicine and Dental Sleep Medicine for providing oral appliances for our patients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To define the major types of sleep disorders and recognize their signs and symptoms
  2. To define the levels of sleep studies and their advantages and limitations
  3. To explore the various methods of treating sleep disorders and their benefits and limitations
  4. To review our patient’s compliance of various treatment modalities for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  5. To gain an understanding of the important role of the dental professional in treating O S A

Randy Patch – BSc 1969 University of Victoria, DMD 1974 UBC, MD 1977 UBC. He commenced practice in general medicine and dentistry in Kamloops, 1978. He was Director of Member Services, BCDA 2012/13. He currently practices dentistry and consultation practice in sleep medicine- 2013 to present. He fabricates an approved sleep appliance for appropriate patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
